Artist Statement

I have always liked art, and have taken more art classes when I can. I signed up for photography because I thought it sounded cool. I have since learned that the picture doesn't have to start pretty in reality to be a pretty picture. Photography, when done well, can make even the most boring object interesting. I try to reflect that in my work. When taking pictures I look for things that would look good in the picture rather than in reality. Sometimes those will be things that in reality are even more of a sight, but sometimes those things will be boring and mundane. Like for example, telephone wires or a pad of post it notes. But the beauty in art is the process and seeing the final result. What you start with doesn't matter, with work it can be made interesting. When drawing sometimes I start out scribbling on the page and just wait to see where the pencil takes me. In my work I like to have variation. There is very few things that are recurring throughout. And that is deliberate. I try to make sure that there are varying levels of contrast, subjects ,and perspective in my photos. This applies to everything, often I will make it up as I go and work when inspiration hits. Same goes for meaning. Art doesn't always have to have meaning. It can be completely pointless, or it could represent the weight of the world. I do what I think looks cool, sometimes it may be very symbolic, and sometimes it might be ridiculous. Often drawings and handmade artwork will tend to be more symbolic, whereas photos tend to be literal. But as long as I enjoy the process and the result it doesn't matter.
